ireland5-152.jpg“Assume Nothing…Tell Students Everything,” that is what my literacy professor said when he was explaining the importance of activating schema or background knowledge in order to level the playing ground for all students, and I agree.  There is no big secret to becoming educated.  It’s a matter of obtaining experiences, becoming motivated, and learning how to comprehend  and navigate the world around you.  That requires a guide (a teacher).

Bonjour, Je’ m appelle Elaine or Hello, my name is Elaine, and the little guy with me in the sidebar image is my grandson, Gavin.  I am a recent graduate of the Initial Certification Grades 1-6  program at the University of Oswego in New York.   I finished my student teaching experience and the last two New York State exams I had  to take in December of 2009.   I am thinking about studying for another masters degree in literacy, because I believe that reading makes the world go ’round, and I absolutely love doing it, but  for now, I am ready to be in a classroom applying the skills and knowledge I learned at college. I will have plenty of time to share my love for reading there.

My hope for the future… to create a learning environment that is rich in language and authentic experiences so that students can see that there is a purpose for learning, and it will be relevant to their lives.
